Friends and family from far and near gathered at the Cutler Family Homestead to celebrate the impending first birthday of Madeleine Beryl Cha Cutler.

Korean tradition calls for a one-year old to don a silk outfit and sit amongst pyramids of fruits and cakes while she chooses between a host of symbolic items that will determine her future destiny.

Madeleine chose first a microphone (pop star? public speaker? politician?), then a hundred dollar bill (investor? saver? pickpocket?), and finally (at her father’s urging) a baseball.

Jewish tradition calls for a blowout party in the very backyard where Mom and Dad were married and where Maddie had her naming ceremony, so we did that too!

And then it was time for cake!
